DSM7 server updates

Hello Michael.

I have installed the server on my Synology NAS (DSM7) but I see that the updates that you are releasing here, are not pushed in Package Manager of DSM. Isn't any other way of sideloading the server app, like the apps that are installed from Synology Community repos?

#2

Sure, link now added

#3

DSM does not allow the package installation, with the following error message
"Unable to install VirtualHerebecause it runs with root privileges. Packages with root privileges might execute commands as the root user and compromise your system security. Please contact the package developer to change the privilege settings of the package"

So I contact with you :)

#4

OK yes i thought that might happen. That is why i originally didnt put the link.

Any updates now need to be signed and approved by Synology.

Thats why i havent updated it on their Package Center yet, it takes a long time.

I will at some point but there are no high priority fixes so there is no need to at the moment.

Just stick with your current version, ill remove the link on my website for the time being

#5

ok as long as there is no inconsistency with the latest clients...

#6

VirtualHere is always forwards/backwards compatible

#7

Hello Michael. I was wondering if it would be possible, just to replace the main executable file inside @appstore\VirtualHere folder, in order to update the server on the latest version. I could try it with SSH. Have you tried if this could work? Because I assume that the problem with the istallation package is the root priviledges that is flaged with. Are there other inconsistencies with other files inside NAS file system that the file replacement could cause? As I said... just a though.

#8

No, actually i tried that a few days ago on my NAS and it wont let me even if I use sudo. It says permission denied.

#9

Still no news on delivering updates in DSM7.0+ versions. Isn't really any other way to update the server? Like the community packages?

#10

No, synology has locked everything down so you cant just install the app manually anymore. Virtualhere requires special permissions which works with only the App Store installation.

#11

It sounds like some folks might have to move away from Synology and install the server on a Mac or pc to get updates? I have a sandisk driverless dongle that drops all the time and all I can do is reboot. not sure if the problem is virtual here or the anywhere feature. Eitherway, its not working.

#12

Whats a sandisk driverless dongle? Is there a URL on the internet for its details?

#13

They are essentially usb thumb drives that don't need a driver to mount and security key in one to run licensed software. The way it has been working is: Plug into Synology then use from client. I get a message from Synology that it has been disconnected and then it shows up on the client of my remote computer. Randomly it just disconnects and all I can do is reboot by Synology as it doesn't see the dongle after that. I should also add that I am using easy find and not sure if there are other settings I should try.

Can you email me mail@virtualhere the virtualhere log file. You will need to ssh to synology and use e.g winscp to copy the /var/log/virtualhere.log
