Virtual Here client 5.5.4 on MacOS encounters errors and stops responding after using multiple devices in succession

Virtual Here on Macos tends to get into an unrecoverable state after connecting to multiple devices in succession. First several connection connect and disconnect successfuly, but eventually VH throws a similar sequence of errors, followed by more connections failing due to insufficient virtual devices.

prior to 13:23:44 VH showed no outward signs of problems, connections working as expected

at 13:23:44 connected to a device, it appears that the OS briefly registered the device, and then lost it, while connnection was still acquired in VH

at 13:24:16 connection to the same device was attempted again, this time being noted as successfully acquired by VH but not appearing in OS 

between 13:24 and 13:34 in this log, This behaviour repeated 6 time while attempting to connect to the same device

from 13:34 onwards, attempts to connect resulted in the device not being acquired in VH client anymore, although VH still returned a 0 exit code when done via command line, and resulted in no reaction outside of new system message when done through VH client gui.
