It was working fine for years then after a reboot all of a sudden. Just tried the latest version 4.7.3 and I still get the same behaviour sadly

Its strange it says crashed but wont say what "module" actually crashed, it says unknown.
Anyway a quick google search shows https://www.tenforums.com/software-apps/206789-application-stopped-running-i-dont-know-what-else-try-2.html which talks about disabling DEP for that particular program. See if that resolves it.

I'll take a look thanks, whats weird is that this just actually happened again to a second system which was also running virthual here server, again after a reboot. So theres now two systems with the same behaviour which could point to some now policy has been pushed to the PCs by IT
